Skip Hire FAQs | Common Questions Answered | GNG Waste Management

Question 1

What size skip do I need for a bathroom renovation?

Accepted Answer

A 4-yard midi skip is usually sufficient for a bathroom renovation. If you're also removing tiles, a bath and other heavy materials, consider an 8-yard skip to be safe. Call us and we'll advise based on your specific project.

Question 2

What is the most popular skip size?

Accepted Answer

Our 8-yard maxi skip is one of our most popular sizes. It's suitable for full house clearances, loft conversions, garden landscaping and most renovation projects.

Question 3

What is the difference between a skip and a RORO container?

Accepted Answer

A standard skip is lifted by a skip lorry and is suitable for domestic and light commercial use. A RORO (roll-on roll-off) container is much larger and is loaded onto a specialist vehicle — it's designed for high-volume commercial and industrial waste.

Question 4

Can I mix different types of waste in the same skip?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can mix most general waste types in the same skip. However, certain materials must be kept separate — particularly soil and hardcore (which are heavy and may exceed weight limits), and any hazardous materials which cannot go in a standard skip at all.

Question 5

How quickly can you deliver a skip?

Accepted Answer

We offer same-day and next-day delivery subject to availability. Call us on 01429 427 673 to check availability for your area.

Question 6

How long can I keep the skip?

Accepted Answer

Standard hire periods vary — contact us to discuss your requirements. We can arrange extended hire for longer projects.

Question 7

What happens to my waste after collection?

Accepted Answer

Your waste is taken to our facility at Sandgate Industrial Estate in Hartlepool where it is sorted and processed. We aim to maximise recycling and minimise the amount sent to landfill.

Question 8

Do I need to be at home when the skip is delivered or collected?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily, as long as we have clear access and you have confirmed the placement location in advance. We'll agree the details with you when you book.

Question 9

Do I need a permit to put a skip on the road?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If the skip will be placed on a public road or pavement, you need a permit from your local council. We can advise on the permit process — contact us when you book.

Question 10

Do I need a permit if the skip is on my driveway?

Accepted Answer

No. If the skip is entirely on private land (such as your driveway), you do not need a permit.

Question 11

How long does it take to get a road permit?

Accepted Answer

Permit processing times vary by local authority. Contact us as early as possible if you need a road permit so we can factor this into your delivery schedule.

Question 12

What can I put in a skip?

Accepted Answer

You can put most general household and construction waste in a skip, including furniture, general rubbish, timber, plasterboard, tiles, bricks, rubble, garden waste and soil. Some restrictions apply — see below.

Question 13

Can I put soil in a skip?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but soil and hardcore are heavy materials. There are weight limits on all skips, so a skip filled entirely with soil may exceed the limit. Contact us to discuss the best option for large quantities of soil.

Question 14

Can I put electrical items in a skip?

Accepted Answer

Most electrical items can go in a skip. However, items containing refrigerants — such as fridges, freezers and air conditioning units — cannot be placed in a skip and must be disposed of separately.

Question 15

What cannot go in a skip?

Accepted Answer

The following items cannot be placed in a standard skip: asbestos-containing materials, hazardous chemicals or solvents, clinical or medical waste, items containing refrigerants (fridges, freezers), large quantities of tyres, batteries or paint, and gas cylinders.

Question 16

Can I put asbestos in a skip?

Accepted Answer

No. Asbestos-containing materials cannot be placed in a standard skip. We are licensed to transport asbestos separately — contact us to discuss your requirements before handling any suspected asbestos.

Question 17

Can I put paint in a skip?

Accepted Answer

Small quantities of dried paint can usually go in a skip. Large quantities of liquid paint or other hazardous coatings cannot. If in doubt, contact us before disposing of paint.

Question 18

Do you offer commercial skip hire?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We provide commercial skip hire, RORO container hire and waste management services for businesses, builders, contractors and housing developers across the North East.

Question 19

Can I set up a credit account?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Established businesses and contractors can apply for a credit account. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

Question 20

Do you provide waste transfer notes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We provide waste transfer notes for all commercial collections, which you need to demonstrate compliance with your waste duty-of-care obligations.

Question 21

Can you collect hazardous waste?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We are licensed to transport hazardous waste including asbestos-containing materials. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements before moving or packaging any hazardous materials.

Question 22

What should I do if I find asbestos?

Accepted Answer

Do not disturb it. Contact a licensed asbestos surveyor to assess the material. Once it has been safely removed and packaged by a licensed contractor, we can arrange collection and transport to a licensed disposal facility.
